How to Apply to Your Local

Each IBEW local has its own JATC (Joint Apprenticeship Training Committee) that handles apprenticeship applications. The general process: apply during an open window, submit required documents (HS diploma or GED, transcripts showing algebra, ID), take the aptitude test, complete the scored interview, and get ranked on the eligibility list. Rank decides who gets the call — and rank is set by your test and interview.

Frequently Asked Questions

How do I know when my IBEW local is accepting applications?

Every local sets its own schedule — some accept applications year-round, some open for a few days a year, and some cap applications and close early. This directory tracks the published status for 117 locals, and each local page offers a free email alert that fires the moment applications open.

How many IBEW locals are there?

There are over 700 IBEW locals across the United States and Canada, but many cover utility, railroad, or manufacturing work. This directory covers 117 inside-wireman (construction electrician) locals — at least one in every state — which handle the classic 4-5 year electrician apprenticeship.

Are all IBEW locals the same?

No. Locals vary by pay scale, geographic jurisdiction, application model, and competitiveness. Some accept applications daily; others run a single window per year or even a lottery. The aptitude test is largely standardized; everything else is local.
