What's on the IBEW Aptitude Test

The NJATC Aptitude Test (also called the IBEW aptitude test or JATC entrance exam) has four sections. Most locals require a composite score in the top 50-60% to move forward in the selection process.

Study Tips From the Field

1.

The math section is the hardest for most people. Practice fractions and worker/rate problems first.

2.

Number sequences: look at the differences between numbers, not just the numbers themselves.

3.

Reading comp passages are short — usually 3-4 sentences. Read slowly and answer only from the passage.

4.

Mechanical reasoning is about ratios and proportions, not memorizing machine parts.

5.

A passing score is typically 4/9 on reading and 4/33 on math — but higher scores improve your ranking.

6.

You can usually retake the test after 6 months if you don't pass. Check with your local JATC.
